Project Description

Making the Most of a Small Garden

When you have a small garden, you need to make the most of every square metre, and this is possibly the smallest garden design I have undertaken! Measuring just a few metres deep, this front garden of a barn conversion needed some creative thinking to make the most of the space and work around the existing decking.

The design uses a zig-zag pattern in the paving to increase the sense of depth, and add interest to the hard landscaping. A low slate cut stone wall provides both an occasional seat for evening sun, as well as providing a bit of height and screening. An Adezz water cube acts as a focal point and brings sound into the garden, while some clever carpentry by the landscapers has increased storage massively by utilising the dead space beneath the decking to create a wood store and cupboard. All this, and we still managed to fit in a bike store! Ikea would be proud!

Planting is lush and colourful, with Nandina, Acer Sango-Kaku and Japanese Hakon grass surrounding large box balls to bring year round texture and interest. I am really pleased with how this tiny space has transformed.
